About Richard

Richard Coan is exploring an emerging artistic practice, based in the North West of England.

He has been making things for many years (photographs, films, drawings, collages, songs, poems, publications and participatory work), alongside a long career as a graphic designer and creative director.

More recently, he has begun to notice connections between the different things he has made and the ways he has worked with people and places.

He is interested in understanding what those connections might mean, and whether they amount to something beyond simply a way of being.

Trying to work out an artistic statement

I’m not sure I have one yet.

I know that I process things by making. I follow what catches my attention, and through making, noticing and capturing, I sometimes feel more present… more connected to myself, other people and something beyond myself.

I’m interested in understanding why I keep coming back to this, what it means, and whether there is something here that might become an artistic practice.

I’m still working that out.
